On May 2, 2025, LuNa Smelter Mbogo Mine Site held a solemn and meaningful commemoration event at the Kiziguro Genocide Memorial Site, paying tribute to the 20,123 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi who are laid to rest there. These victims were tragically killed in the former Murambi commune, now part of Gatsibo and Gicumbi Districts.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Mrs. Mukamana Marceline, Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs for Gatsibo District, and the President of IBUKA. They joined the LuNa Smelter mining team, led by Mine Operations Manager Duduzani Mgezelwa, in a moment of remembrance, reflection, and a unified call for peace, healing, and national unity.

Supporting Survivors Through Action
As part of this year’s commemoration, LuNa Smelter extended tangible support to genocide survivors by donating two female cows to families of survivors. This gesture is part of our broader corporate social responsibility efforts and reflects our continued commitment to:

  • Empowering genocide survivors through sustainable support,
  • Promoting community healing and resilience,
  • And contributing to the socio-economic development of the areas where we operate.

Honoring the Past, Building a Peaceful Future
LuNa Smelter is deeply committed to honoring the memory of genocide victims while actively participating in Rwanda’s journey of reconciliation and national rebuilding. We believe that remembering the past is essential for shaping a peaceful and united future.
