LuNa is the first tin smelter in Great Lakes Region fully conformant against Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) which validates smelters’ management systems and sourcing practices to meet the requirement of the OECD Due Diligence Guidance, the Regulation (EU) 2017/821 of the European Parliament and the U.S. Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

We recognize Better Mining Program (RSC Global) as an approved upstream assurance mechanism and also recognize ITSCI (ITRI Tin Supply Chain Initiative) as an active system supporting due diligence activities to mining operators in the Great Lakes Region of Africa.

Recognising that LuNa while sourcing minerals from Rwanda and adjoining countries may also be at risk of contributing to or being associated with significant adverse impacts, including serious human rights abuses and conflict.
We are determined to respect human rights and avoid contributing to conflict through LuNa’s sourcing decisions, including the choice of our suppliers.
We also acknowledge the challenges that mining and ASM communities face and being at the forefront of the industry we wish to work towards ensuring that ASM miners and communities also benefits from the mining industry.

We are also working with local authorities, international organisations a civil society organisations promoting the responsible mining practicies and building capacity among vulnerable groups.

We communicate our expectations on the responsible sourcing of minerals to our suppliers, develop long-term relationships and implement measurable improvement plans where approriate and necessary.

We are also working together with our suppliers to improve their performance and conform to our supply chain policy.

Due Diligence Guidance

LuNa Smelter will work with its suppliers to seek remedies for non-compliance with this policy. These remedies may include suspension or discontinuing cooperation with the supplier. LuNa is encouraging its suppliers to:

establish, where practicable, long-term relationships as opposed to short-term or one-off contracts in order to build strong and constructive cooperation;

communicate their expectations on responsible supply chains of minerals from conflict-affected and high-risk areas, and incorporating LuNa’s supply chain policy and due diligence measures into commercial contracts and/or written agreements;

consider ways to support and build capabilities of suppliers to improve performance and conform to company supply chain policy;

develop, together with suppliers, measurable improvement plans involving, where appropriate and necessary, local and central authorities, international organisations and civil society in risk reduction activities;

cooperate with organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), International Tin Research Institute (ITRI), International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMAP) and other relevant organisations to put in place credible and effective processes that seek to ensure that only conflict-free minerals enter the LuNa Smelter mineral supply chain.

Grievance Policy

LuNa Smelter is committed to conducting business in accordance with the law and the highest ethical standards. In line with our Code of Business of Conduct, the implementation of Grievance Policy further supports the following principles:

We ensure that grievances and complaints will be addressed in a timely, transparent, accessible and equitable manner.

We ensure fair and objective investigation of grievances and complaints identified, based on facts or reliable evidence.

We will make every effort to ensure that the whistle-blower and all interested parties are protected against any reprisal, discrimination or other adverse employment consequences – excluding compliance with the law and disciplinary rules.

All interested parties are encouraged to voice to LuNa any concerns regarding misconduct, wrongdoing or any identified risk within our supply chain at the earliest opportunity with a view to them being fully investigated by the appropriate authority.
